Une sc\u00e8ne dont la simplicit\u00e9 et la gr\u00e2ce offrait une atmosph\u00e8re paisible. Comme lui, il porte son art avec l\u2019ambition de la transcendance, recherche la lumi\u00e8re qui s\u2019incarne et le verbe qui devient lumi\u00e8re. Comme lui, il con\u00e7oit une \u0153uvre pour un lieu, une peinture indissociable de l\u2019endroit dans lequel elle s\u2019inscrit. \u00c9tonnante et improbable proximit\u00e9 entre deux artistes que les si\u00e8cles s\u00e9parent mais que la foi dans l\u2019art r\u00e9unit. Rencontre.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Que vous inspire le th\u00e8me de l\u2019Annonciation ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Les Annonciations me troublent profond\u00e9ment. Je ne suis pas croyant, mais ces \u0153uvres ont quelque chose de tr\u00e8s conceptuel : c\u2019est litt\u00e9ralement la lumi\u00e8re qui s\u2019incarne.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Quand avez-vous d\u00e9couvert l\u2019Annonciation de Fra Angelico ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Ce choc remonte \u00e0 mes vingt ans. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, je suis parti en Toscane avec des amis. Nous dessinions \u00e0 la craie sur les trottoirs, place Michelangelo. J\u2019avais r\u00e9alis\u00e9 une grande Pi\u00e9ta. C\u2019est ainsi que nous avions financ\u00e9 notre voyage. Et puis, je garde en m\u00e9moire ce moment \u00e0 San Marco : une v\u00e9ritable r\u00e9v\u00e9lation.\u2028\u2028 Ce n\u2019est pas seulement une question de peinture, l\u2019\u0153uvre est indissociable du lieu dans lequel on la d\u00e9couvre. On monte un escalier, et elle appara\u00eet, comme suspendue au-dessus de nous. Elle a une pr\u00e9sence, une puissance. On la re\u00e7oit presque comme une apparition. La texture du mur, les pigments, la mati\u00e8re picturale, tout est l\u00e0, tr\u00e8s physique, tr\u00e8s sensible, tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9sent. Une lumi\u00e8re vient de l\u2019est, de la gauche, et \u00e9claire progressivement l\u2019image. L\u2019ange annonce \u00e0 Marie qu\u2019elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 choisie pour une mission essentielle : donner naissance au Christ, celui qui rach\u00e8tera les p\u00e9ch\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Comment percevez-vous la figure de la Vierge dans cette sc\u00e8ne ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>On lui confie l\u00e0 quelque chose d\u2019immense qui va bouleverser le destin de l\u2019humanit\u00e9. Et elle l\u2019accueille avec gr\u00e2ce, douceur, humilit\u00e9. Elle rayonne. Son visage, je m\u2019en souviens, m\u2019avait profond\u00e9ment troubl\u00e9. Une beaut\u00e9 grave. C\u2019est le Verbe qui devient lumi\u00e8re.\u2028\u2028Il y a chez elle une humilit\u00e9 dans la posture. Elle et l\u2019ange adoptent la m\u00eame attitude, et pourtant on dirait qu\u2019ils ne se tiennent pas sur le m\u00eame plan. Presque comme si elle \u00e9tait d\u00e9cal\u00e9e, dans la diagonale de la pi\u00e8ce. Ce n\u2019est pas aussi frontal que dans d\u2019autres Annonciations, tout est clos. M\u00eame la petite fen\u00eatre donnant sur la chambre est barr\u00e9e, comme une allusion \u00e0 la virginit\u00e9. L\u2019espace qui pourrait \u00e9voquer le paradis est lui aussi ferm\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Vous avez mentionn\u00e9 d\u2019autres Annonciations. Comment celle-ci se distingue-t-elle ?\u2028<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>J\u2019appr\u00e9cie \u00e9galement beaucoup l\u2019Annonciation de Simone Martini, aux Offices. Elle est tr\u00e8s belle, dor\u00e9e, et on y voit m\u00eame le texte. L\u2019ange Gabriel semble venir de voler : on sent dans les drap\u00e9s et les \u00e9l\u00e9ments flottants le mouvement de son arriv\u00e9e. Et le geste de la Vierge est magnifique. Elle tient un livre.\u2028 Chez Fra Angelico, rien de tout cela. C\u2019est d\u2019une sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 totale. Dans l\u2019Annonciation de Cortone, par exemple, on trouve davantage de d\u00e9tails : Adam et \u00c8ve, des \u00e9l\u00e9ments narratifs\u2026 Mais ici, non. Rien de tout cela. Fra Angelico la d\u00e9veloppera d\u2019ailleurs dans chaque cellule. Cela conf\u00e8re \u00e0 cette \u0153uvre une qualit\u00e9 particuli\u00e8re : calme, apais\u00e9e.\u2028 Le petit tabouret affirme une forme d\u2019humilit\u00e9, de pauvret\u00e9. Il y a l\u00e0 une humanit\u00e9 sereine. Cette peinture a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue pour ce lieu pr\u00e9cis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Votre travail d\u2019artiste vous relie-t-il \u00e0 ce type de repr\u00e9sentation ?\u2028<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Je suis tr\u00e8s sensible \u00e0 cela. Mon propre travail s\u2019inscrit dans cette logique de mise en sc\u00e8ne. Il m\u2019a conduit \u00e0 lire les Exercices spirituels de Loyola, les \u00c9vangiles\u2026 Je me nourris de tout cela.\u2028 Je crois \u00e0 la n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 de ces l\u00e9gendes. Ce qui me touche le plus, ce sont les peintres de cette \u00e9poque. Et m\u00eame si je suis ath\u00e9e, je suis heureux de travailler dans la sph\u00e8re chr\u00e9tienne. Ce dogme de l\u2019Incarnation, pour un artiste, c\u2019est un cadeau.
