Avec sa s\u00e9rie des <em>Nymph\u00e9as<\/em>, il r\u00e9alisera l&#8217;un de ses plus grands chefs-d&#8217;\u0153uvre et poussera sa peinture aux limites de l&#8217;art abstrait. Explorant les reflets changeants et les subtilit\u00e9s lumineuses d&#8217;un bassin recouvert de n\u00e9nuphars, il cherche \u00e0 restituer l&#8217;atmosph\u00e8re vibratoire de cette surface de ciel. St\u00e9phane Lambert, romancier, po\u00e8te, essayiste, part toujours d\u2019une image pour \u00e9crire. Ici, l\u2019\u00e9crivain nous raconte le choc \u00e9motionnel \u00e9prouv\u00e9 \u00e0 la Fondation Beyeler devant\u00a0<em>Le Bassin aux nymph\u00e9as<\/em>\u00a0de Claude Monet, l\u2019invitant ainsi \u00e0 prendre sa plume\u2026<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Qu&#8217;avez-vous ressenti la premi\u00e8re fois que vous avez vu un panneau des Nymph\u00e9as de Monet ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Quand j&#8217;ai \u00e9t\u00e9 confront\u00e9, pour la premi\u00e8re fois, \u00e0 un panneau des Nymph\u00e9as \u00e0 la Fondation Beyeler, la modernit\u00e9 de l&#8217;\u0153uvre m&#8217;a imm\u00e9diatement saut\u00e9 au visage. Il s&#8217;est pass\u00e9 quelque chose de tr\u00e8s myst\u00e9rieux en moi. Quand j&#8217;ai vu cette peinture, \u00e7a a \u00e9t\u00e9 comme une \u00e9vidence. Il y a un espace pour le ciel, m\u00eame s&#8217;il est parfois minime, un espace pour la terre et une perspective. Or, dans les Nymph\u00e9as de Monet, tout est m\u00e9lang\u00e9. Monet a pouss\u00e9 le r\u00e9alisme jusqu&#8217;au bout de sa logique, puisqu&#8217;il a fait une sorte de focus cin\u00e9matographique sur l&#8217;eau, refl\u00e9tant les \u00e9l\u00e9ments. \u00c0 partir de l\u00e0, tous les \u00e9l\u00e9ments sont bouscul\u00e9s, d\u00e9sordonn\u00e9s. Il n&#8217;y a plus d&#8217;ordre : au lieu de regarder horizontalement, on regarde vers le bas, on voit le ciel r\u00e9verb\u00e9r\u00e9 dans l&#8217;eau, tout en gardant la transparence de celle-ci, avec les nymph\u00e9as \u00e0 sa surface. On a donc toutes les couches du r\u00e9el qui se m\u00e9langent \u00e0 la surface du tableau.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Comment percevez-vous la d\u00e9marche artistique de Monet ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Ce qui est prodigieux chez Monet, c&#8217;est qu\u2019il n\u2019a pas adopt\u00e9 de posture : il est all\u00e9 au bout de sa d\u00e9marche de peintre r\u00e9aliste, usant de tous ses proc\u00e9d\u00e9s qu&#8217;il a mis en place par l&#8217;exp\u00e9rience, parce que Monet \u00e9tait avant tout un empirique. Ce n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas du tout un th\u00e9oricien. Artistiquement, c\u2019\u00e9tait une d\u00e9marche importante de se dire qu\u2019il fallait, face \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9mergence de ce nouveau m\u00e9dia qu\u2019est la photographie, creuser davantage. Avec les Nymph\u00e9as, Monet inaugure au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle, une exp\u00e9rience immersive et m\u00e9ditative. Je pense \u00e0 Marc Rothko, qui plus tard, recherchera aussi cette qu\u00eate de modernit\u00e9 et de spiritualit\u00e9\u2026 Peut-on dire que Monet a en quelque sorte annonc\u00e9 l\u2019abstraction ? <\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Il y a une vraie immersion dans l\u2019\u0153uvre de Monet, sa peinture interagit avec le lieu, comme c&#8217;est le cas avec les grandes \u0153uvres de Rothko. Et \u00e9videmment, Rothko, de ce point de vue-l\u00e0, est un des h\u00e9ritiers de Monet.<\/p>\n<p>Monet a voulu ce lieu, la fondation Beyeler, comme une sorte de temple moderne o\u00f9 la spiritualit\u00e9 va de pair avec la contemplation de l&#8217;art. Finalement, le projet de Rothko est assez similaire avec sa chapelle \u00e0 Houston. C&#8217;est en cela, peut-\u00eatre, qu&#8217;il y a un c\u00f4t\u00e9 abstrait chez Monet : on perd ses rep\u00e8res. On entre dans la peinture, c&#8217;est une sensation, une \u00e9motion, et je pense que c\u2019est \u00e7a la caract\u00e9ristique de l&#8217;art abstrait.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est vraiment une \u0153uvre dans laquelle on entre par la sensation qui en d\u00e9borde. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 le plus loin qu&#8217;on puisse aller sur ce chemin-l\u00e0 : partir d&#8217;un \u00e9l\u00e9ment r\u00e9el pour peindre jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 l\u2019effacement total du motif. Mais il n&#8217;est jamais pass\u00e9 de l&#8217;autre c\u00f4t\u00e9. Ce n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas comme les vrais abstraits du XXe si\u00e8cle, qui partent finalement de l&#8217;int\u00e9riorit\u00e9 humaine pour produire une image. Monet, lui, est toujours parti d&#8217;une vision ext\u00e9rieure, de ce qui contaminait cette vision \u2014 aussi bien ses sens que la maladie, puisque la cataracte a vraiment influenc\u00e9 son \u0153uvre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Que pensez-vous de Monet, en tant qu\u2019homme et en tant qu\u2019artiste ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Il s&#8217;\u00e9tait mis en t\u00eate d&#8217;offrir ces panneaux des Nymph\u00e9as \u00e0 la France pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer la fin de la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale. C&#8217;\u00e9tait tr\u00e8s beau, cette id\u00e9e de ce vieil homme, vivant \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9cart de la ville. Giverny \u00e9tait devenu son rep\u00e8re, son propre monde, ou il con\u00e7u ses jardins et ses \u00e9tangs.<\/p>\n<p>Ce vieil homme avait d\u00e9j\u00e0 enterr\u00e9 tous ses condisciples de l&#8217;impressionnisme. Il avait enterr\u00e9 le si\u00e8cle o\u00f9 il \u00e9tait n\u00e9, dans cet isolement qui \u00e9tait le sien, dans ce refuge. Et imaginer qu&#8217;il pouvait encore apporter quelque chose comme \u00e7a, \u00e0 travers son art, c&#8217;\u00e9tait \u00e0 la fois \u00e9mouvant et vertigineux. Quelle influence cette \u0153uvre a-t-elle eu sur votre \u00e9criture ? Comment cette personnalit\u00e9 vous a t-elle inspir\u00e9e ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Depuis que j&#8217;\u00e9cris, je parle de choses visuelles, d&#8217;images mentales, mais je n&#8217;avais jamais, avant de voir ce panneau de Monet, imagin\u00e9 \u00e9crire un livre entier sur l&#8217;art. Je vis maintenant pr\u00e8s de Giverny, ce qui montre combien ce choc \u00e9motionnel avec les Nymph\u00e9as a compt\u00e9 pour moi. \u2028\u2028L\u2019image commun\u00e9ment admise de Monet est celle d\u2019un peintre, homme jovial et bon vivant &#8211; ce qu\u2019il \u00e9tait en partie. Mais cette vision masque la complexit\u00e9 de sa personnalit\u00e9, marqu\u00e9e par de nombreuses nuances et une certaine part d\u2019ombre. Une forme d\u2019intranquillit\u00e9, d\u2019inconfort int\u00e9rieur le traversait en permanence, l\u2019emp\u00eachant de se reposer sur ses acquis. Jamais il ne s\u2019est satisfait de ce qu\u2019il avait accompli, ni proclam\u00e9 que son \u0153uvre \u00e9tait achev\u00e9e.
