Il est interloqu\u00e9, choqu\u00e9 : que signifie cette \u0153uvre \u00e9trange ? Plus tard, adulte, il entreprend un travail conceptuel autour des objets industriels puis des dessins industriels. C\u2019est alors qu\u2019il red\u00e9couvre son \u0153uvre et y constate une filiation \u00e9tonnante. Bernar Venet revient sur cet artiste inclassable, v\u00e9ritable acteur de tous les bouleversements du l\u2019art du XXeme si\u00e8cle dont le mouvement dada.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Quel a \u00e9t\u00e9 votre premier contact \u00e0 l\u2019art ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>J&#8217;avais une m\u00e8re formidable qui m&#8217;a toujours encourag\u00e9 \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper mon esprit artistique. Je lisais plusieurs magazines d\u2019art, mais un jour elle m\u2019a achet\u00e9 un grand livre qui s&#8217;appelait \u201c<em>La peinture moderne<\/em>\u201d \u00e9dit\u00e9 par Skira. Et tout m\u2019est apparu bien plus clairement\u00a0: j\u2019ai compris Kandinsky 1910, Delaunay, Matisse, bien entendu Picasso\u2026 Je trouvais tous ces artistes formidables, mais il y avait un tableau, un seul, que je ne comprenais pas. Que des grands peintres fassent des tableaux abstraits et toutes sortes de choses folles, je comprenais, mais pas \u00e7a\u00a0! \u2028\u2028C&#8217;\u00e9tait un tableau de Picabia qui s&#8217;appelait <em>Parade amoureuse<\/em>. Il repr\u00e9sentait une sorte de machine compl\u00e8tement d\u00e9sarticul\u00e9e. C&#8217;est un assez grand tableau, \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s un m\u00e8tre sur soixante-quinze centim\u00e8tres. Il est de 1917, au moment exact o\u00f9 Marcel Duchamp faisait son urinoir, donc \u00e0 une \u00e9poque o\u00f9 Duchamp, Picabia et Man Ray aussi, cr\u00e9aient ce qu&#8217;on a appel\u00e9 le mouvement dada. C\u2019\u00e9taient des cr\u00e9ateurs, mais surtout des provocateurs. entre votre \u0153uvre et ce tableau de Picabia\u2026 \u00c0 quel moment avez-vous d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de cr\u00e9er \u00e0 partir d\u2019objets industriels\u00a0?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>En effet. En 1966, en pleine remise en question de mon travail, je me suis mis \u00e0 faire des tubes en relief, \u00e0 travailler avec le carton et des peintures industrielles&#8230; Et un jour, alors que je n&#8217;avais pas les moyens de faire une grande sculpture pour une exposition, je fis un dessin industriel tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cis, avec des dimensions, des c\u00f4tes, et je le trouvais tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant\u00a0! \u2028\u2028Je pars du principe que les artistes cr\u00e9ent tous des objets, tandis que moi, je faisais quelque chose qui se rapporte \u00e0 l\u2019information sur l&#8217;objet. Pourquoi l&#8217;information sur l&#8217;objet ne serait-elle pas aussi int\u00e9ressante que l&#8217;objet ? Il se trouve que j&#8217;ai la chance d&#8217;avoir un fr\u00e8re, Serge, qui \u00e9tait dessinateur industriel. Et dans ses livres, je d\u00e9couvre plein de croquis, de dessins industriels qui me paraissaient une imagerie r\u00e9ellement novatrice par rapport \u00e0 tout ce que l&#8217;on conna\u00eet en art. C&#8217;est un engrenage de cr\u00e9maill\u00e8re, exactement ce que je faisais au trait noir sur fond blanc, r\u00e9alis\u00e9 sur carton. Tout d&#8217;un coup, je d\u00e9couvre cette relation entre nous deux\u00a0! Qu\u2019en pensez-vous\u00a0?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>\u2028\u2028Oui, certains diront qu&#8217;il y avait l\u00e0 une critique de la civilisation industrielle, comme ce qu\u2019a fait Charlie Chaplin en 1936 dans <em>Les Temps modernes<\/em>. Moi, je ne pense pas que les artistes \u00e9taient particuli\u00e8rement critiques de ces id\u00e9es \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0. Je ne pense pas que parce que notre civilisation perd le Nord, ces artistes cr\u00e9aient ces tableaux pour la critiquer. Il me semble qu&#8217;ils \u00e9taient purement dans la provocation. Faire une machine comme \u00e7a, inutile \u00e0 peindre, c&#8217;\u00e9tait tellement loin de tout ce que l&#8217;on attend d&#8217;un tableau\u00a0: on y cherche surtout la s\u00e9duction de la peinture. Or chez Picabia, il n&#8217;y en a pas du tout\u00a0: il y a certes de la couleur, mais il n&#8217;y a pas de s\u00e9duction dans son sujet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>\u2028Qu\u2019est-ce qui vous fascine dans le travail de Picabia\u00a0? <\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Il peint des objets compl\u00e8tement fous, des objets que l&#8217;on dit m\u00e9caniques, mais priv\u00e9s de toute utilit\u00e9 logique. On peut dire qu\u2019ils sont vou\u00e9s \u00e0 l&#8217;inaction. Il fait table rase du pass\u00e9\u2026 \u2028<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Cet artiste inclassable du XX e si\u00e8cle a renvers\u00e9 les conventions artistiques et n\u2019a eu de cesse de r\u00e9inventer la peinture tout au long de sa carri\u00e8re\u2026 Est-ce cet esprit libre qui vous a inspir\u00e9 ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>\u2028Il est vraiment l&#8217;artiste du XX e si\u00e8cle, avant notre g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, qui s&#8217;est lib\u00e9r\u00e9 de la notion de style. Quand j&#8217;ai commenc\u00e9 en 1966, je voulais aussi tout faire, sauf de l&#8217;art tel qu&#8217;on le connaissait, bien que je n&#8217;avais pas ce c\u00f4t\u00e9 provocateur. Je n&#8217;aurais jamais mis, dans mon travail, cette sorte de fantaisie, comme dans la <em>Parade amoureuse<\/em>, o\u00f9 je ne sais pas quel titre un peu fantaisiste ou po\u00e9tique.
