Prince de Lagash, en M\u00e9sopotamie vers  2120 av. J-C. dont le nom signifie \u00ab&nbsp;l\u2019appel\u00e9&nbsp;\u00bb, il a laiss\u00e9 une vingtaine de statues, dont une grande partie est conserv\u00e9e au mus\u00e9e du Louvre. Assise ou debout, ces statues \u00e9taient plac\u00e9es dans les temples afin de perp\u00e9tuer sa pri\u00e8re au dieu. Taill\u00e9e en diorite, pierre dure, elles offrent un aspect poli \u00e9tonnant. La perfection de la finition et la rondeur des volumes \u00e9voquent les \u0153uvres de contemporains. Cette \u00e9trange modernit\u00e9 d\u2019\u0153uvres ayant travers\u00e9 quatre mill\u00e9naires a suscit\u00e9 l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de Francis Joann\u00e8s. L\u2019attitude pieuse, humble, mains jointes des statues est surprenante pour un potentat. Elles rappellent que ce pouvoir est d\u2019essence divine et que le prince en est conscient. Retour sur la relation \u00e9troite avec une \u0153uvre qui a travers\u00e9 les si\u00e8cles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Quelle \u0153uvre vous a marqu\u00e9 lors de vos \u00e9tudes sup\u00e9rieures en histoire ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>C&#8217;est \u00e0 la fois lors de la d\u00e9couverte de certaines salles du Louvre et durant mon parcours d&#8217;initiation \u00e0 l&#8217;histoire de la M\u00e9sopotamie, que j\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert une \u0153uvre, ou plut\u00f4t une collection de statues qui m\u2019a vraiment impressionn\u00e9 : ce sont les statues qu&#8217;on appelle les statues de Gudea. \u2028Gudea, c\u2019est un prince d&#8217;une cit\u00e9-\u00c9tat sum\u00e9rienne, vers 2 100 avant J.-C., dans le sud de la M\u00e9sopotamie, actuellement l\u2019Iraq. Dans l&#8217;\u00c9tat de Lagash, ce prince Gudea, dont le nom signifie probablement \u00ab celui qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 appel\u00e9 par les dieux \u00e0 exercer le pouvoir \u00bb, s&#8217;est fait repr\u00e9senter dans une s\u00e9rie d\u2019une vingtaine de statues en position de pri\u00e8re. Ce sont ce qu&#8217;on appelle des <em>statues d\u2019orants<\/em>, destin\u00e9es \u00e0 \u00eatre dispos\u00e9es dans les temples de la ville de Lagash, de fa\u00e7on \u00e0 repr\u00e9senter ou pr\u00e9server la paix et son pouvoir sur la ville ?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Oui, c&#8217;\u00e9tait parce que lui-m\u00eame ne pouvait pas passer sa vie dans les temples \u00e0 prier les dieux, m\u00eame s&#8217;il \u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement pieux. On sait que c&#8217;est ce prince qui, par ses inscriptions royales, a tenu \u00e0 marquer son prestige, sa puissance et toute l&#8217;\u00e9tendue de son pouvoir. Et l\u00e0, il est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on extr\u00eamement humble, pourrait-on dire tr\u00e8s d\u00e9pouill\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Son statut de potentat contraste avec cette repr\u00e9sentation \u00e9pur\u00e9e et humble, en effet. Pourriez-vous nous d\u00e9crire cette \u0153uvre\u00a0?  Quels sont les caract\u00e9ristiques de cette statue\u00a0?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, la t\u00eate des statues d\u2019orants est imberbe, alors qu&#8217;on sait qu\u2019en M\u00e9sopotamie, le fait de montrer une barbe abondante est un signe de prestige et de puissance. Il est v\u00eatu simplement, un carr\u00e9 de tissu drap\u00e9 autour de son corps, qui laisse \u00e0 d\u00e9couvert l&#8217;\u00e9paule droite et le bras. Ce n&#8217;est pas lui qui est destin\u00e9 \u00e0 attirer l&#8217;attention. Ce qui attire l&#8217;attention, ce sont les deux \u00e9l\u00e9ments les plus expressifs d&#8217;une personnalit\u00e9 : les mains et le visage. Or, les mains de Gudea, sur chacune de ces statues, sont repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es dans le geste traditionnel de la pri\u00e8re m\u00e9sopotamienne, serr\u00e9es l&#8217;une contre l&#8217;autre, ench\u00e2ss\u00e9es, et parfaitement immobiles. \u2028\u2028Le visage est aussi repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 dans une expression tr\u00e8s calme et pieuse&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;autre \u00e9l\u00e9ment, c&#8217;est le visage : il a les yeux l\u00e9g\u00e8rement tourn\u00e9s vers le haut, vers la divinit\u00e9, comme s&#8217;il \u00e9tait fascin\u00e9 dans ce dialogue intime avec la divinit\u00e9 \u00e0 laquelle il s&#8217;adresse. L\u00e0 encore, le roi est repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 dans toute sa puissance, mais a les yeux exorbit\u00e9s, parce qu&#8217;il regarde la statue de la divinit\u00e9. C&#8217;est notamment le cas d\u2019Assurnasirpal et de Salmanazar, dont on sait par ailleurs qu&#8217;ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 des conqu\u00e9rants d&#8217;une cruaut\u00e9 absolue, et qui sont pourtant repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s en fid\u00e8les du dieu. Elles donnent l&#8217;impression d&#8217;\u00eatre en pr\u00e9sence de la divinit\u00e9, car il s&#8217;agit de statues de culte cens\u00e9es \u00eatre habit\u00e9es par le dieu, et les rois en d\u00e9pendent totalement. C&#8217;est la divinit\u00e9 qui leur assure leur pouvoir, qui les l\u00e9gitime, et \u00e0 laquelle ils doivent rendre des comptes sur la mani\u00e8re dont ils exercent ce pouvoir. Puis, c\u2019est le but m\u00eame de cette repr\u00e9sentation : r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 exprimer une pi\u00e9t\u00e9 intense \u00e0 travers des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s extr\u00eamement simples. \u2028\u2028Ce qui est int\u00e9ressant aussi, c&#8217;est que l&#8217;on retrouve certains proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de sculpteurs contemporains, qui se concentrent sur la forme au d\u00e9triment des d\u00e9tails.
