Des portraits d\u2019une humanit\u00e9 mise \u00e0 nue de l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du jazz, dans les quartiers pauvres de Chicago, peints dans une grande dignit\u00e9 malgr\u00e9 la mis\u00e8re et la souffrance. En plein essor du Pop Art et de l\u2019abstraction, le peintre adopta dans les ann\u00e9es 1970 un style r\u00e9aliste, influenc\u00e9 par l\u2019art fran\u00e7ais de la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle. Rencontre inattendue entre le peintre am\u00e9ricain et le marchand d\u2019art, qui d\u00e9bouchera aussit\u00f4t sur un contrat avec la galerie Loeb et une grande amiti\u00e9. Robert Guinan est toujours rest\u00e9 en marge du monde de l\u2019art, marqu\u00e9 dans son enfance par un po\u00e8me de Rudyard Kipling sur la situation id\u00e9ale de l\u2019artiste, qui ne peint ni pour l\u2019argent, ni pour la gloire. Rencontre.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Parmi les artistes que vous avez rencontr\u00e9 durant votre carri\u00e8re, y en a-t-il un qui vous ai particuli\u00e8rement marqu\u00e9\u00a0?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>J&#8217;ai rencontr\u00e9 beaucoup d&#8217;artistes, et j&#8217;en ai d\u00e9fendu un certain nombre. Mais il y en a un qui a marqu\u00e9 ma carri\u00e8re de marchand de tableaux, c&#8217;est un Am\u00e9ricain, Robert Guinan, qui a fait toute son \u0153uvre \u00e0 Chicago. J\u2019ai rencontr\u00e9 son travail en 1972 \u00e0 la Foire de B\u00e2le. J&#8217;ai eu un coup de foudre chez un confr\u00e8re viennois qui exposait trois peintures de Guinan. Et deux de ces tableaux tr\u00e8s forts, tr\u00e8s vivants, tr\u00e8s humains dans ses sujets, ses mod\u00e8les, repr\u00e9sentaient des hommes et des femmes meurtris par la vie. Ils n\u2019\u00e9taient pas dans une mis\u00e8re \u00e9conomique, mais dans une mis\u00e8re morale. Il y avait parmi eux des ivrognes, des prostitu\u00e9es, des alcooliques, des drogu\u00e9s. Et Robert Guinan avait d\u00e9velopp\u00e9, avec tous ces gens une intimit\u00e9. On y voit ce personnage au centre, tr\u00e8s \u00e9clair\u00e9 dans sa robe blanche, ainsi qu\u2019une vieille presse. C&#8217;est une vieille installation, on le voit bien. Le propri\u00e9taire de la teinturerie, qui s&#8217;appelait Mike Steiglitz, \u00e9tait une sorte de bienfaiteur dans le quartier. C\u2019\u00e9tait quelqu&#8217;un chez qui les gens se r\u00e9unissaient, car il avait une grande humanit\u00e9. Il s\u2019arrangeait toujours pour trouver un travail \u00e0 ceux qui le lui demandaient, comme cette femme, qui s&#8217;appelait Pauline, retrait\u00e9e avec tr\u00e8s peu de revenus. Et il lui trouva un emploi chez un traiteur, qui lui remit des \u00e9pis de ma\u00efs qu&#8217;elle \u00e9pluchait, pr\u00e9parait et mettait dans ces barquettes, ou elles seront cuites. La peinture, \u00e7a reste le plaisir des yeux. Tous ces mod\u00e8les, aucun n&#8217;est vraiment en bon \u00e9tat, mais ils sont tous tr\u00e8s dignes. Chicago, et c&#8217;est un grand myst\u00e8re. Il a fait tout le contraire que font les artistes pour se faire conna\u00eetre. C\u2019est probablement une des raisons pour lesquelles il est rest\u00e9 inconnu \u00e0 Chicago. Pourtant, il savait qu&#8217;il \u00e9tait bon, comme Van Gogh savait qu&#8217;il \u00e9tait bon. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"intBlockQR\">\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__Q\"><p>Si Robert Guinan\u00a0n\u2019a pas rencontr\u00e9 de succ\u00e8s \u00e0 Chicago, il a su attirer des collectionneurs \u00e0 Paris, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 vous. Et aujourd\u2019hui, son \u0153uvre est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e dans une exposition importante \u00e0 Lyon\u2026<\/p>\n<\/div>\n    <div class=\"intBlockQR__R\"><p>Il y a cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement tr\u00e8s important, cette chance, cette ouverture, ce support, qui est une exposition de Robert Guinan de trois mois tout un \u00e9t\u00e9 au mus\u00e9e des Beaux-arts de Lyon, le deuxi\u00e8me mus\u00e9e de France. Alors on le d\u00e9couvre\u00a0! Comme s&#8217;il avait fallu la caution d&#8217;un grand mus\u00e9e\u2026 Moi je n&#8217;en prends pas ombrage. Beaucoup ont pu le d\u00e9couvrir, ou le remarquer pour la premi\u00e8re fois. Peut-\u00eatre qu\u2019ils n&#8217;\u00e9taient pas pr\u00eats \u00e0 le voir avant cette exposition ? Comme pour Picasso\u00a0: certaines personnes n\u2019\u00e9taient pas pr\u00eates \u00e0 voir son travail.<\/p>\n<p>Mon p\u00e8re, Pierre Loeb, a \u00e9t\u00e9 parmi les premiers \u00e0 l\u2019\u00eatre. Il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s proche de Picasso quand il exposait Miro \u00e0 sa galerie en 1925. Les gens venaient \u00e0 la galerie pour en rire, se moquer\u00a0! Mais je pense qu&#8217;il y a un moment o\u00f9 les gens sont pr\u00eats. Et puis en ce qui concerne Guinan, la qualit\u00e9 \u00e9tait l\u00e0, mais il fallait un peu plus d&#8217;importance dans le diffuseur. La galerie n&#8217;\u00e9tait pas suffisante et le mus\u00e9e a fait l&#8217;affaire.
