Il y a quelque chose d\u2019une beaut\u00e9 m\u00e9lancolique dans les pages qui suivent, de cette m\u00e9lancolie dont Victor Hugo note qu\u2019elle est le \u00ab\u2009bonheur d\u2019\u00eatre triste\u2009\u00bb. Plus que le plaisir fugace de l\u2019instant, la m\u00e9lancolie est la joie profonde, car indissociable du temps \u00e9coul\u00e9, que suscite en nous l\u2019apparition de bancs moussus, de sculptures fantomatiques envelopp\u00e9es de housses, de ces ch\u00e2teaux perdus dans les for\u00eats, \u00e9voqu\u00e9s par Nerval dans <em>Sylvie.<\/em> Tout se passe comme si la photographie suivait ici une double vocation, faire m\u00e9moire de lieux et d\u2019architectures souvent anciens et patrimoniaux, et guetter en eux l\u2019indice d\u2019une disparition. Le photographe capture des constructions (maisons, ch\u00e2teaux, usines, fortifications), il les reb\u00e2tit presque \u00e0 l\u2019aide de perspectives et de plans g\u00e9om\u00e9triques pr\u00e9cis, mais son \u0153il r\u00eaveur se perd dans un sous-bois, s\u2019attarde sur le dos d\u2019une sculpture de nymphe solitaire, et l\u2019image se dissipe quelquefois dans une nuit incertaine.<br><br>Depuis ses premiers pas, \u00c9tienne Revault, par n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 et amour des lieux, s\u2019attache \u00e0 raconter le patrimoine, \u00e0 en c\u00e9l\u00e9brer les principales r\u00e9alisations. Il d\u00e9couvre le m\u00e9dium photographique, jeune homme, en assistant son p\u00e8re, Jacques Revault, directeur de recherche au CNRS et sp\u00e9cialiste des monuments du monde arabe. Le jeune \u00c9tienne Revault assiste tout d\u2019abord son p\u00e8re \u00e0 Tunis puis il se rend en France o\u00f9 il travaille pour diff\u00e9rents photographes, \u00e0 Aix-en-Provence et surtout \u00e0 Marseille. Il se souvient des \u00e9quip\u00e9es au cours desquelles il partait photographier de nuit un paquebot \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019ampoules flash, reli\u00e9es par un fil, en une seule prise, sur plaque g\u00e9latine. Plus tard, vers 1967-1969, il se rend au Caire, pour trois ans, engag\u00e9 par l\u2019Institut Fran\u00e7ais d\u2019Arch\u00e9ologie Orientale\u2009: d\u2019architectures et de m\u00e9moire, il est encore question, car le voici aux services d\u2019un arch\u00e9ologue qui sollicite ses comp\u00e9tences pour photographier des fouilles et des temples. Si le pr\u00e9sent volume ne propose pas de clich\u00e9s sur l\u2019\u00c9gypte, le regard d\u2019\u00c9tienne Revault reste profond\u00e9ment marqu\u00e9 par la couleur blanche du pays et ces visages qui, dit-il, ont la beaut\u00e9 d\u2019anciens pharaons et de l\u00e9gendes bibliques. Son parcours le m\u00e8ne par la suite en France o\u00f9 il travaille pour la RMN, photographiant des peintures classiques. Une partie de sa carri\u00e8re se dessine ensuite, lorsqu\u2019il devient le photographe attitr\u00e9 de la revue <em>Monuments historiques<\/em>. Toujours voyageant, exer\u00e7ant son \u0153il, il sillonne la France, se rend un peu partout en Europe et au Canada. Il fixe les monuments consacr\u00e9s et class\u00e9s du patrimoine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durant cette longue p\u00e9riode de commandes, de 1974 \u00e0 1996, il r\u00e9alise des photos personnelles dont le pr\u00e9sent volume t\u00e9moigne, comme cette s\u00e9rie sur les escaliers et les sculptures all\u00e9goriques d\u2019anges accompagnant des mausol\u00e9es, suivant la tradition iconographique des .invisible.flickity-enabled {visibility: visible !important}\n  <\/style>\n\n\n<p>La principale qualit\u00e9 du photographe, dit \u00c9tienne Revault, c\u2019est la <em>disponibilit\u00e9<\/em>. Non pas la propension \u00e0 capturer un instant pris au vol, le fameux \u00ab\u2009instant d\u00e9cisif\u2009\u00bb d\u2019Henri Cartier-Bresson. Il ne s\u2019agit pas non plus de restituer le \u00ab\u2009\u00e7a-a-\u00e9t\u00e9\u2009\u00bb en quoi Roland Barthes reconna\u00eet dans <em>La Chambre claire <\/em>la sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9 du geste photographique, art proustien du souvenir, entrecroisant l\u2019\u00eatre et le n\u00e9ant, la disparition et le moment pr\u00e9sent. La disponibilit\u00e9 est une mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s libre de se laisser surprendre pour accueillir, dans un contexte et un cadre donn\u00e9, impos\u00e9, <em>autre chose.<\/em><br><br>Les photographies en noir et blanc de ce volume font m\u00e9moire de cette autre chose, en prenant un malin plaisir \u00e0 d\u00e9tourner leur sujet, \u00e0 se glisser dans les coulisses, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 l\u2019on r\u00eave plus ais\u00e9ment que sur une sc\u00e8ne trop \u00e9clair\u00e9e. II y a beaucoup d\u2019escaliers dans ces pages, lieux ordinaires mais intrigants par excellence, si l\u2019on y songe, les escaliers ont valeur de passages et de seuils. Monter ou descendre des marches, c\u2019est toujours p\u00e9n\u00e9trer de mani\u00e8re initiatique dans un monde nouveau, un autre temps\u2009; c\u2019est avancer au c\u0153ur de l\u2019image. Les escaliers d\u2019\u00c9tienne Revault sont d\u2019abord des vortex, des puits en spirale, ils semblent par moments imiter le contour de l\u2019\u0153il du photographe devant son objectif. Je vois \u00e7\u00e0 et l\u00e0 des escaliers de pierre m\u00eal\u00e9s \u00e0 la v\u00e9g\u00e9tation, au d\u00e9tour d\u2019un village et d\u2019un cimeti\u00e8re. Ils sont vides, notre regard les occupe et les franchit ind\u00e9finiment. La qualit\u00e9 de ces photographies, nettes et \u00e9th\u00e9r\u00e9es, solides et friables comme du temps stratifi\u00e9, est aussi celle de certaines peintures avec lesquelles elles partagent une atmosph\u00e8re onirique. On ne se demande plus qui de la peinture, du dessin et du clich\u00e9 imite l\u2019autre. Les architectures sont vues de biais, derri\u00e8re une barri\u00e8re, par-dessus un plan d\u2019eau qui met un r\u00eave dans l\u2019image&nbsp;; je m\u2019attends \u00e0 tout moment \u00e0 voir surgir un personnage d\u2019Antoine Watteau, une de ses femmes \u00e9gar\u00e9es dans un jardin, dont on ne sait si elle est sculpt\u00e9e ou r\u00e9elle. Peut-\u00eatre les deux \u00e0 la fois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00eame lorsqu\u2019elles c\u00e9l\u00e8brent un b\u00e2timent, les photos d\u2019\u00c9tienne Revault lui conf\u00e8rent la troublante beaut\u00e9 d\u2019une ruine, la m\u00e9lancolie de monuments hant\u00e9s. La po\u00e9tique des ruines que Diderot \u00e9rige en pr\u00e9cepte esth\u00e9tique vibre partout dans ces pages\u2009: plusieurs clich\u00e9s d\u2019\u00e9glises abandonn\u00e9es et de cimeti\u00e8res \u00e9voquent telle toile d\u2019Hubert-Robert ou du peintre romantique allemand Caspar David Friedrich. Des sites industriels oubli\u00e9s, \u00e0 la beaut\u00e9 crue et aust\u00e8re, dialoguent \u00e9tonnamment avec la rigueur d\u2019abbayes et de porches d\u2019\u00e9glises. Rien de sinistre dans les ruines, elles entrem\u00ealent l\u2019art et la nature, la mousse et le granit, la colonne et l\u2019arbre. Elles jettent des ponts entre les mondes et esquissent les contours d\u2019un th\u00e9\u00e2tre imaginaire. \u00c0 chacun de s\u2019y faufiler et de retrouver la saison de son
